BLAUER TACTICAL SYSTEMS

Violence Doesn't Care What Martial Art We Study.

The greatest hack is when you learn to use your own body's survival reflex to help you protect yourself.

HELLO, I'M TONY BLAUER

I've spent over forty-five years studying one thing: what actually happens to a human being in the moment a fight finds them.

Not what should happen. Not what happens in a gym, on a mat, with a compliant partner and a referee and a mutually agreed start time. What happens when it's sudden, close, emotional, and ugly, and the person in front of you did not agree to any rules.

Everything I've built — the SPEAR System®, HIGH GEAR®, KNOW FEAR®, Be Your Own Bodyguard®, Evidence-Based Scenario Training®, the Cycle of Behavior®, SPEAR Care® — came out of that one question, asked over and over, for four decades, in front of people whose lives depended on the answer being real.

Make good humans safer. That's been the work since 1977.
02

WHERE IT STARTED

It started in my basement. I was about fifteen, surrounded by Bruce Lee posters, and the year was 1975 when I decided I wanted to be a self-defense instructor. I told my mother I was going to build my own system one day. She was polite about it. I started teaching in 1977.

The thing that changed everything wasn't a win. It was a failure.

I had a student — a kid I'd coached, a kid who could do everything I taught him in class — and he got beaten badly in a real fight at school. He knew the material. He performed it beautifully in the dojo. And when the moment was real, none of it showed up.

That could have been a bad week. Instead it became a career.

Because the honest question wasn't "why did he fail?" The honest question was "what was I actually teaching him?" I had been teaching him to perform against a partner who cooperated, at a distance that never happens, with a start signal nobody gives you in a parking lot. I was teaching a menu.

Real violence doesn't hand you a menu.
03

THE EXPERIMENT THAT DESIGNED MY OWN FAILURE

In 1987, I designed an experiment that guaranteed my failure. I put myself and my students into ambushes we couldn't script — sudden, close, emotional, non-compliant. I wanted to see what showed up when the menu disappeared.

What showed up was the flinch.

Before that, I'd been running what I called Panic Attack drills going back to 1982 — scenario work built to trigger the real physiological response of being ambushed, instead of the sanitized version everybody was rehearsing. The drills kept producing the same result. Under genuine startle, nobody performed a technique. Everybody performed the same primal, protective, convergent movement. The hands went up. The body turned. The chin dropped.

Every system I'd studied treated that as an error to be trained out. I decided it was the answer.

That reflex became the SPEAR System® — Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response. The method moves from neurobiology to physiology to kinesiology, in that order — not from style. It converts the startle-flinch — the biological airbag your body deploys whether you approve of it or not — into a tactical position instead of a liability.

There is nothing faster than the flinch. So stop fighting it. Use it.
04

THE GEAR PROBLEM

The moment you commit to training people the way it really happens, you hit the wall every honest instructor eventually hits: you can't pressure test what you can't safely absorb.

The protective equipment available in the 1980s was built for compliance, not for reality. It was bulky, it was slow, and the second you put it on, the athlete inside it stopped moving like a human being. You weren't testing the person anymore. You were testing the suit.

So I built HIGH GEAR® — an impact-reduction suit designed to preserve the wearer's real athleticism, real range of motion and real fear response while allowing full-contact, non-scripted scenario work. It's manufactured through LBT/Desmark, a relationship that goes back to 1993 when Naval Special Warfare became the first client for the suit. HIGH GEAR® is now in use with military, law enforcement, corrections, healthcare and civilian training organizations worldwide.

Pain is the mother of invention. I didn't build a product. I built the missing piece of my own research.
05

FEAR WAS ALWAYS THE REAL SUBJECT

Here's what took me the longest to say out loud: none of this was ever really about fighting.

In the 1980s I was teaching a program called Cerebral Self-Defense — the psychology and physiology of confrontation, taught before anybody in the industry wanted to hear about the psychology of anything. That material became the first Panic Attack video, filmed by Panther Productions after Joe Jennings saw my 1985 demo tape. Over the following decades it grew into KNOW FEAR®.

The premise is simple and most people fight it: fear isn't the problem. Mismanaged fear is the problem. You cannot be brave if you are not afraid. Courage requires fear as a prerequisite. The goal was never to be fearless — the goal is to be able to do things scared, and to know the difference between fear that's protecting you and fear that's paralyzing you.

Fear isn't the enemy. It's the energy.™

That's why the framework is Detect, Defuse, Defend, in that order. Detection buys you time. Defusing buys you the encounter without the injury. Defending is the last one for a reason, not the first one.

Personal defense isn't about learning how to win a fight. It's about learning how to avoid the fight.

Once I understood that fear management was the actual subject, the applications stopped being tactical. The same protocol runs on relationships, on money, on health, on the conversation you've been avoiding for six months. The threat changes. The physiology doesn't. Physiology doesn't take days off.

THE ROAD YEARS

From 1993 to 2007 I was on the road more than 200 days a year. Gary Klugiewicz introduced me to the law enforcement community in 1993, and that opened the door to the work that's defined most of my career: teaching the people who don't get to choose whether the fight happens.

Over the years that's included U.S. Army Special Forces, Naval Special Warfare, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Federal Air Marshal Service, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Department of Energy, along with federal, state, municipal and international police agencies, corrections systems, healthcare organizations and many other agencies across multiple continents.

In 2007, the UK's Association of Chief Police Officers approved the SPEAR System® for inclusion in the Personal Safety Training Manual used by British law enforcement. In 2009 my company was awarded a U.S. Army contract valued at $17M to supply HIGH GEAR® in support of the Army's combatives program. In 2010 an English Mental Health NHS Trust ran the first SPEAR® pilot built for staff managing mentally disordered offenders, and the Scottish Prison Service adopted a modified SPEAR® within their Personal Protective Techniques training.

I moved to the United States in 2008, starting in Virginia Beach. I'm based in the San Diego region today, but the company is international — we have lead trainers in the UK, across the USA and in Australia, and the work runs worldwide.

WHAT THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SHOWS

I've never been interested in adjectives. I'm interested in whether the training changes outcomes.

41%

reduction in head trauma

29%

reduction in use-of-force complaints

Dorset Police, independent five-year study of SPEAR System® training delivered as a single four-hour annual session.

One four-hour block, once a year. That's not a marketing claim. That's a five-year data set from a police force that had no reason to flatter me.

“

Tony Blauer cares more about your safety than you do. I promise. Listen carefully to this man.

— JAY FERRUGIA, INTRODUCING TONY BLAUER TO 700 COACHES

"I can't think of any other guest who has the ability to literally help you save your own life just by you listening to their recorded conversation."

— Andy Petranek, host, Whole Life Challenge

"Hearing Tony present is like listening to a philosophy professor, a neuroscientist, and a world champion combat athlete explain the secrets of the universe. Tony is a coach in the purest sense of the word. He receives my highest recommendation."

— AJ Madden, coach to business owners and executives

THE THROUGH-LINE

There's a reason the same method works for a Special Forces soldier, a nurse on a psych ward, a CEO, a mother in a parking garage and a fighter in a cage.

I don't teach a style. I teach the human being.

Every person carries the same operating system: the same startle response, the same adrenal dump, the same tunnel vision, the same voice in the head that wants to negotiate with the moment instead of act in it. The context changes. The hardware doesn't. The mind navigates the body. That's the whole thesis. Everything else is application.

Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, once observed that I'm one of the very few people whose work has crossed every hand-to-hand domain there is — professional fighters, Tier 1 military, SWAT, law enforcement, bodyguards, executives, public safety, hospital staff and firefighters. I take that seriously, because crossing domains is only possible if you're teaching something underneath all of them.

Make good humans safer, sooner.
09

TODAY

I still teach. I run the SPEAR System® certification programs, BTS90, the Tactical Garage Gym and a global affiliate network. I host the KNOW FEAR® Podcast — over 100 episodes — and I've been a guest on hundreds more, across business, leadership, finance, parenting, psychology and tactical training. I coach a small number of executives one-on-one each year, applying the same fear-management protocol to business, leadership and life instead of to violence. My book, The Tony Blauer SPEAR System®, is the definitive guide to the method — and there are three more in progress.

More than 500,000 people have trained in this material across 47 countries. I'm a self-defense entrepreneur, a researcher, a coach, a husband, a father and a dog owner, in an order that changes depending on the day.

Stay curious. Arrogance kills growth.
